March 4th, 2014

Greetings

I’d like to start this month’s newsletter by thanking Tracy Paul for her years of service to the track club in the role of President.  Tracy did a wonderful job, and I have big running shoes to fill!

Tracy Paul receives a small token of appreciation from the track club for her term as President.

Tracy will be remaining onboard as a board member.  Also, Linda Davis has was voted in as a new board member during the February board meeting. This brings the final board list to:

President: Steve Barber

Vice President: Dorn Kile

Secretary: Cindy Koehler

Treasurer: Tracey Beckendorf

Tracy Paul

Dennis Miller

Tim Ford

Mark Cristy

Linda Davis

Next, I’d like to take a moment to introduce myself.  My name is Steve Barber.  I am a single father of two daughters, ages 3 and 5.  I have been running for approximately 4 years.  I began running after quitting smoking and quickly became obsessed with 5K road racing.  After a while, this turned to marathons.  Eventually, I wound my way into the world of Ultra-marathon running and trail running.  I have various plans for the club, and look forward to lots of great races and training runs in the future with our track club.

Youth Athletics

Indoor Track Program

We had Twenty-four participants this season.

The participants competed at ETSU, Clemson, and Vanderbilt with large groups. Clemson was an overnight trip.

We competed at the very selective University of Kentucky Invitational with 4 athletes:

  • Men’s 60 yard dash,
  • Men’s Long Jump
  • Women’s Pole Vault
  • Men’s 2 Mile

Next on the calendar is the New Balance Nationals (March 14-16, 2014 in New York City).  The following athletes have qualified:

  • Malik Hardy (60m, long jump, and 4×200 relay)
  • Brandon Bonds (4×200)
  • Seth Howell (4×200)
  • Jared Gibson (4×200)

The Youth Program had a number of donors who made the trip possible for the boys at only $350 each—total donations at over $1500.  Thanks to all who donated!  Thanks also go to Knoxville Endurance who donated $200 to cover team fuel expenses.

Membership Input Requested

During the February ORTC Board meeting, the topic of an ORTC Racing Team was discussed.  It is envisioned that such a team could compete in series such as the Knoxville Track Club Grand Prix Team Competition, single race competitions such as the Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon team events, or maybe even longer relay races such as the Ragnar series.

Runners of all speeds would be welcomed on this team.  The only prerequisites would be ORTC membership, a passion for running, and a supportive attitude for the rest of the team.

As this idea is still in its infancy, we have a lot of flexibility in what we might make of it.  The first step is to determine if there is interest in such a team.  Race schedules, goals, uniforms, divisions, etc… are still up in the air and nothing is written in stone.

Please chime-in if this interests you!  Email Steve Barber at: OakRidgeTrackClub@GMail.com or better yet join the discussion on our Facebook page: Oak Ridge Track Club on Facebook!

Oak Ridge Track Club – Youth Athletics Program
The program’s mission is to provide instruction in techniques and training in track and field and distance running as well as to encourage the youth of Oak Ridge and surrounding areas to compete in the events of their choice.

Middle School Cross Country Camp:  The camp was a huge success this year with over 30 kids participating.  Coach Sam Roberts was in charge of the camp, preparing these young runners for a successful season on their school cross country team.  The kids had a great time and came out of the camp with much improved running knowledge.

The ORTC Youth Athletics Program was able to donate 12 foam rollers along with a container for each to the RMS and JMS cross country programs.  These rollers enable athletes to keep myofascial tissue supple and flexible, keeping kids injury free.  The middle schools are implementing use of the foam rollers as they also implement the science based warmup protocol taught to them at the middle school camp.

Middle School Cross Country Postseason Program:  This will be held at RMS.  More information will be available in the future.

Turkey Trot:  Wednesday, November 6, at 3:00 pm at RMS.  More information will be forthcoming.

If you have an interest in working with the younger runners, let us know.  We have many opportunities for club members to assist with; for example, helping with a training camp, turkey trot, or field events at track meets. Consider sharing your passion for the sport, it’s a great opportunity to encourage and inspire our future runners and leaders.

Group Runs

There have been several inquires recently about ORTC group runs.  If you have a place and time that you run and would like others to join you, let us know.  We can post weekly runs on our website and facebook page.
